Struggles for Equality

Solution

  1. (d) Both poverty and lack of resources
Explanation:Both poverty and lack of resources
  2. (a) (a)-(1),(b)-(2),(c)-(3) Explanation:
    1. In 1994, the government gave the rights for fishing in the Tawa reservoir to private contractors. These contractors drove the local people away and got cheap labour from outside.
    2. The Tawa dam began to be built in 1958 and was completed in 1978. It submerged large areas of forest and agricultural land.
    3. On January 2, 1997, people from 33 villages of Tawa started the new year with the first catch.
  3. (b) Tawa Matsya Sangh
Explanation: Originating in the Mahadeo hills of Chindwara district, the Tawa flows through Betul, before joining the Narmada in Hoshangabad. The Tawa dam began to be built in 1958 and was completed in 1978.TMS is the newly formed sangh known as Tawa Matsya Sangh. It organised rallies and chakka jam (road blockade), demanding their right to continue fishing for their livelihood in the reservoir.
  4. (b) 1994
Explanation: Some of the displaced people settled around the reservoir and apart from their meagre farms found a livelihood in fishing. They earned very little. In 1994, the government gave the rights for fishing in the Tawa reservoir to private contractors. These contractors drove the local people away and got cheap labour from outside. The villagers stood united and decided that it was time to set up an organisation and do something to protect their rights and then the TMS organisation created.
  5. (c) 13%
    Explanation: 13%
  6. (a) - (iv), (b) - (iii), (c) - (ii), (d) - (i)
  7. Tawa
  8. True
  9. Unequality in India is due to poverty and lack of resources in India.
  10. The Tawa Matsya Sangh demanded their right to continue fishing for their livelihood. With the TMS taking over the fishworkers were able to increase their earnings substantially.
  11. When the private contractors were given the rights for fishing in the Tawa reservoir, they began suppressing the local people. They drove them away and got cheap labour from outside. Those who did not want to leave, were threatened. The villagers could not tolerate the atrocities of the contractors for a long time. They stood united and set up an organisation known as Tawa Matsya Sangh to protect their rights.
  12. The recently formed Tawa Matsya Sangh (TMS) held rallies and a chakka jam in order to get their rights, to do fishing and to earn their livelihood. The government formed a committee to assess the issue. The committee suggested that fishing rights should be granted to the villagers for their livelihood. The Madhya Pradesh government gave fishing rights for the reservoir to the people displaced by the Tawa dam in 1996. After two months, the five-year lease agreement was signed and on 2nd January 1997 people of 33 villages began their new year with the first catch.
    1. The movements, songs, and poems recognise all people as equal because these all are based on justice and equality. The Constitution of India recognises all persons as equal. All movements and struggles which occur refer to the Indian Constitution to make their point regarding equality and justice.
    2. This is the reason why the fish workers participated in movements organised by Tawa Matsya Sangh. The Constitution of India has been known as a ‘living document’ because it has real meaning in our lives.
    3. There are people in a democracy who try to broaden the concept of democracy and work towards greater recognition of equality on existing as well as new issues.
    4. Problems related to equality are central to democracy and we have seen such issues that challenge the idea of equality in a democracy. It is necessary to have enough resources to support and nurture families and to act against any discrimination in order to earn dignity and self-respect.
