CBSE Worksheet 01
Ch-16 Major Domains of the Earth

Solution

  1. (b) 5
Explanation: The five major oceans are the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Southern Ocean and the Arctic Ocean.
  2. (b) Is measured from the level of the sea
Explanation: The level of seawater remains the same everywhere. Elevation of land is measured from the level of the sea, which is taken as zero.
  3. (b) Asia
Explanation: Asia is the most populous and prosperous continent in the world.
  4. (b) Earth
Explanation: The earth is the only planet which has life. Human beings can live here because the life-sustaining elements of land, water and air are present on the earth. The surface of the earth is a complex zone in which three main components of the environment meet, overlap and interact.
  5. (c) 60
Explanation: Gases are found up to 60 km of the sea level that is within the limits of the troposphere.
  6. (i)-(b), (ii)-(a), (iii)-(d), (iv)-(c).
    1. Indian
    2. Bachendri Pal
    3. Nile
    4. Land
    1. True
    2. True
    3. False. A large part of Africa lies in the Northern Hemisphere.
    4. True
  7. Mariana Trench is the deepest point on the lithosphere and is located in the Pacific Ocean.
  8. There are seven major continents, namely:
    1. Asia.
    2. Europe.
    3. Africa.
    4. North America.
    5. South America.
    6. Australia.
    7. Antarctica.
  9. The atmosphere act as a thin blanket of air because:
    1. Our earth is surrounded by a layer of gases called the atmosphere.
    2. This thin blanket of air is an integral and important aspect of the planet.
    3. It provides us with the air we breathe in.
    4. It protects us from the harmful effects of the sun’s rays.
  10. Indented coastline is those coasts where coastline is not smooth and there are a number of cuts and bays all along the coast giving rise to a number of deltas and creeks. The coastline of Atlantic ocean is highly indented. This irregular and indented coastline provides an ideal location for natural harbours and ports and makes it the busiest ocean in the world.
  11. The hydrosphere refers to the water bodies that are found on the earth’s surface. More than 71% of the earth is covered with water. This water is found in all its forms—ice, water and water vapour. Running water in oceans and rivers and in lakes, ice in glaciers, underground water and the water vapour in the atmosphere. More than 97% of the earth’s water is found in oceans. The ocean water is very salty, hence not of human utility. A large proportion of the rest of the water is in the form of the ice sheets and glaciers or under the ground. A very small percentage (0.03%) is available as freshwater. It is this water that we use.
  12. The earth is called the blue planet because 71% of the earth is covered with water and 29% with the land. Hydrosphere consists of water in all its forms in the oceans, lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, ice caps, and ice sheets. On the surface as surface water and below the surface of the earth, in the form of underground water. Water is also present in the atmosphere in the form of water vapour. In other words, running water in rivers and oceans, in lakes, glaciers, underground water and the water vapour in the atmosphere all make the hydrosphere. The oceans form the major part of the hydrosphere. They are all connected with one another.
