CBSE TEST PAPER - 01
Class - 12 English Core [On the Face of It]

Answers

  1. Derry was a fourteen-years old young boy. His face had been burnt by acid so he developed a howling sense of inferiority complex. He could never reconcile himself with his physical deformity. He was always conscious that his face was bad, terrible and could be said the ugliest thing in the world.
  2. Mr. Lamb perhaps identified himself with Derry because he was sailing in the same boat. Though he had conquered his physically disability, he could well understand Derry’s psyche, having himself gone through a similar phase in life. He probably did not want Derry to be a victim of the same.
  3. Both Derry and Mr. Lamb were alike as both were physically impaired. The friendship between them helped the former get over his fears. By inspiring Derry with his optimistic approach Mr. Lamb brings about a positive change in him. So the relation proved to be a blessing for Derry.
  4. Mr. Lamb owned a beautiful apple garden. He loved to welcome people, so when Derry entered his garden he behaved gently and his attitude towards him was protective and accommodating. He advised him not to be afraid, even he warned him to mind the apples lest he should trip.
  5. The ending of the play is quite sad as Mr. Lamb is probably dead. Ending could be happy and positive if Derry would have returned just in time to save Mr. Lamb from falling. Such positive ending would have given a message of hope.
  6. Mr. Lamb is very important character of the play. He is all alone in the world and even physically impaired, still he has an optimistic way to deal with the life. He loves to help people. When he meets Derry he tries to bring about a positive change in him and succeeds in paving Derry’s life towards positivity.
  7. Yes, I completely agree with the statement that ‘beauty of soul is more important than outer beauty’ because our outer beauty is transient and will fade away with time, but a beautiful soul will never change and spreads happiness all around. Thus, we can say that real beauty lies within and not in looks.
  8. The play ‘On the Face of It’ is an apt description of loneliness and alienation on the part of physically impaired people. Such people expect support and love from the world around. But in reality the contrary happens. People ridicule them and this makes them develop the sense of inferiority and forces them to live in seclusion. Derry and Lamb both live alienated life. Derry is often mocked at thus he secluded himself and Mr. Lamb is being called ‘Lamey - Lamb’ by people. Such people are not confident enough to face the world but being responsible citizens we must give them due respect and thus motivate them to feel confident. We should love and support them. We should also make them aware of the innumerable opportunities available for them and bring a ray of hope in their life.

  10. Derry and Mr. Lamb are united by a similarity that both are physically impaired. Mr. Lamb is handicap and Derry on the other hand has a burnt face. But the approach of these two people is totally different. Derry has secluded himself out of his deformity whereas Mr. Lamb always stays positive. Derry can’t bear his public insult, but Mr. Lamb ignores when the children calls him ‘Lamey – Lamb’. The worst thing about Derry’s life is that he distrusts the world. He believes that his face is the ugliest thing in the world and people hate him. But Mr. Lamb’s association with Derry transforms his life positively. He encourages Derry not to give much importance to what people think of him and live his life to the fullest. Derry gets inspired from Mr. Lamb’s attitude and thus becomes a confident youth.
