The narrator started his career as a junior assistant clerk in a law firm. He was assigned the work of serving summons. He hated the unpleasant work. He thought of fleeing to his own town where he could practice law. Once, he went to New Mullion to serve summons on Oliver Lutkins, a witness in a law court.
The case came up in the court. Next morning, The narrator felt shameful for his failure in producing Lukins. The lawyer was ordered him to go back to the town with a man to find him. They met the hack driver. The man told narrator that hack driver was none else than Lutkins. In this way, the summons were finally served on Lutkins
