Beehive Chapter 7
The Duck and the Kangaroo
By Edward Lear
- The Duck and the Kangaroo is a humorous poem.
- The Duck appreciates the kangaroo’s hopping, over fields and water endlessly.
- She finds her own life boring in the pond. She expresses her desire to travel around the world and hop like him.
- The Duck requests the Kangaroo to give her a ride on his back. The Duck assures her that she would sit quite still and they would go over the land and sea.
- The Kangaroo considers the thought seriously.
- The kangaroo has an objection that the Duck's feet are always wet and cold. This can cause him rooMatiz.
- The Duck resolves this by buying four socks for her web-feet, a cloak to keep out the cold and cigars to smoke.
- The kangaroo pleads with the Duck to sit steady and quiet at the end of his tail so that he could balance well. Happily they hopped around the whole world three times round.
- Throughout this poem we can experience a strong bond of friendship.
